At Wright State University, Our set for Oklahoma! was a barn, every panel made of luan and 3/4" plywood. Overtop of the regular barn, our set designer wanted advertisements and bits of sky in various parts, to add detail/interest to the set. We started with the plain wood, and then covered it in a grey mixture of joint compound, flex glue and Rosco paint. (Will hence forth be called Goop.) After gooping the wood, we then dragged through it while it was still wet with wallpaper brushes, creating a large grain. After it dried, sometimes for a whole 24 hours, we painted it with three different colors (mixed from Rosco's various paint lines) to created a blue-grey wood, such as a barn out in the weather would have. We then "antiqued" it, by dragging a dark wash in from the corners where the boards overlapped. Afterwards, we drew out where the words/clouds would be. We painted them with various intensities of the same colors, some thinner than others so that you could see more of the barn beneath then. After this step was completed, we spattered and pulled a thinned black/grey color to antique the entire piece and pull it together. The piece shown was the header for the barn.
